ON-CALL HHW PICK-UP SERVICE PROGRAM
The City of Dana Point's goal is to continually present new programs and services aimed at providing access to additional sustainable programs that offer a time-saving advantage for residents. Currently, residents in need of removing Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) from their homes are directed to visit the County of Orange's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility located within the Prima Deshecha Landfill for safe disposal of their collected HHW. As an added level of service to Dana Point residents, the easiest way to dispose of your HHW is now at your front door with*FREE*Residential On-Call HHW Pick-Up Service Program. |
What is HHW?
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is waste that includes everyday items you may find around the house like cleaners and batteries that cannot be placed in your trash or recycling cart/bin. Many consumer products we use in our homes contain hazardous substances or pollutants that can have adverse effects on people or the environment and require proper disposal.
How do I know if it's hazardous? Check the label.
HHW is any types of household product that prohibits disposal as regular waste. If you are not sure if a household item is hazardous, check the product label for one of these commonly used words:
- Toxic
- Caution
- Danger
- Poison
- Corrosive
- Flammable
- Combustible
- Irritant
The *FREE* Residential On-Call HHW Pick-Up Service Program, beginning on February 1, 2014, is a program provided to Dana Point residents to conveniently call CR&R, Inc. for safe, efficient door-side disposal of this special waste stream.
How does it work? Easy as 1-2-3!
1. Call CR&R, Inc. Customer Service at (877) 728-0446 to schedule a convenient HHW pick-up. To keep things easier, pick-ups are typically scheduled for the same day as your usual trash service.
2. Identify to CR&R the types of HHW you'd like to have picked up (see common types of HHW noted below).
3. On your pick-up day, place your HHW for collection at the agreed upon collection area (this area will be determined when scheduling your appointment).

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility:
Please note that the County of Orange HHW Collection Facilities (San Juan Capistrano, Irvine, Huntington Beach and Anaheim) will continue to serve as an additional disposal option for residents.
The closest facility for Dana Point residents is at the landfill in San Juan Capistrano (Prima Deshecha), off Ortega Hwy and La Pata. Hours of operations are Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., closed Sundays, Mondays, holidays and rainy days. Drop off is *FREE* for Orange County Residents.
For more information about Household Hazardous Waste, please call (714) 834-4000 or visit OC Waste & Recycling.
How do I Handle and Transport Household Hazardous Waste (HHW):
- Department of Transportation regulations allow you to carry a maximum of 15 gallons or 125 pounds in one trip. But you can make as many trips as you need.
- State regulations require you to remain in your car when delivering hazardous waste. Materials should be in original container, if not please label container as to contents.
- Containers larger than 5 gallons will not be accepted.
- Containers must be sturdy, non-leaking, and protected from damage.
- Containers must have lids.
- Containers used to transport used motor oil are not normally returned. If you wish to have your used oil container returned, advise the attendant ahead of time. No other containers may be returned to you.
- DO NOT mix different hazardous wastes together (Exception: you may combine similar paints - oil based with oil based; latex with latex; etc. Do NOT mix oil and latex paint together).
- If you have a very small amount of paint left in the can, remove the lid and let it dry out completely. Then it is safe to throw in your trash.

Stop & Swap at the Material Reuse/Exchange Program:
What is Stop & Swap?
A unique program that allows you to drop off household, yard, and car maintenance products you no longer need and pick up other products you can use at home for free! Typical products include: paint, automotive supplies, pesticides, weed killers, cleaning products and much, much, more!
Where are they located?
The Stop & Swaps are located at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers (HHWCC) in San Juan Capistrano, Irvine, Anaheim and Huntington Beach.
How does the Stop & Swap work?
It's quick - Drive through the HHWCC and drop off the products you no longer need but can't throw in the trash. While you wait in your car, an attendant removes the unwanted materials. These products will either be added to the Stop & Swap for someone else to use or be treated and disposed of in an environmentally responsible way.
It's easy - Then park your car and visit the Stop & Swap area. Select products you can use at home, complete a simple form telling us what you are taking, and away you go!
It's FREE - Not only is it free, you actually SAVE money when you take these products home instead of buying new ones.
No hazardous waste from businesses is accepted at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center. Businesses must contact a hazardous waste disposal company by checking the telephone directory under the listing “Waste Disposal – Hazardous” or searching the internet at www.enviroyellowpages.com. For a partial list of disposal companies please visit OC Waste & Recycling/Business Hazardous Waste Referrals.

Multi-Family Residential Waste and Recycling Services
CR&R, Incorporated, our franchised trash hauler, handles all waste and recycling services for the City of Dana Point. CR&R provides waste carts or three-yard bins for multi-family residences. All waste from Multi-Family residences that have bin services is hauled and processed at CR&R's Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) where the waste is manually sorted to achieve maximum diversion of recyclable items. It is best to separate the wet and dry waste if possible because it makes it easier to separate at the MRF. For more information about Multi-Family recycling, please contact CR&R at (877) 728-0446.

The following holidays are recognized by the City’s trash hauler: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
