"How we Study California's History of Drought, Floods, Fire, and Vegetation: What Can the Past Tell us About the Future?"

with Matthew Kirby

Matthew Kirby is a professor at Cal State Fullerton in the Department of Geological Sciences. He hails from the snowy hills of up-state New York where he attended Hamilton College and was introduced to the field of paleoclimatology while researching climate in Antarctica as part of an undergraduate thesis. He received his PhD in 2001 from Syracuse University. Living in sunny, dry Southern California since 2001, Dr. Kirby has focused his attention on the climate stories told by lake sediments. Like pages in a history book, each layer of mud tells a history of the surrounding region. Kirby has been consistently funded by the National Science Foundation, presently working on a $550,000 grant researching California's most recent 3,000-year water history.
