Science Night; Talking Trash with Cristina Robinson

SCIENCE NIGHT

Keep exploring and learning at our Science Night events! Every 2nd Wednesday (except December) scientists, naturalists, and esteemed experts explore a range of topics regarding natural sciences and our environment.

TALKING TRASH WITH CRISTINA ROBINSON

Marine debris and microplastics are of major concern to the oceans and human health. Studies continue to show how microplastics are being spread throughout the food web and the alarming number of things microplastics can be found in, including: beer, tap water, and air pollution. Where do all these microplastics come from and how can they be prevented? How does trash and pollution make its way to waterways and how can people help? What animals are impacted by plastic and what are the consequences on human health? These matters will be discussed and preventative measures will be explored.

Cristina Robinson graduated from California State University of Long Beach with her B.S. in marine biology. At CSULB, she did research in the Reproductive Laboratory and worked in the Shark Laboratory, and participated in the Japan-US E.S. Morse Scholar Exchange Program. After graduation she worked at an environmental consulting company and now works as the Education Coordinator for Orange County Coastkeeper, as well as a Tidepool Educator for Laguna Ocean Foundation. She volunteers with Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, Aquarium of the Pacific, as well as NOAA's West Coast Region. While gaining experience in the field she continues to share her passion for ocean conservation by educating the public on ways their daily actions can help make a positive impact on the environment. Cristina will eventually continue her education with graduate school, wanting to study microplastics or noise pollution in the ocean.
