About three quarter of the species on this planet are insects – about 1 million species have been fully described and another 4 million or so are estimated to exist.  However, alarming new data from many parts of the world suggests that they are declining rapidly, leading to the decline of birds and other insectivores.  Dr. Bryant will review the evidence, discuss the possible reasons and suggest some solutions.

Peter Bryant’s interest and passion are in documenting, monitoring and preserving local biodiversity and ecosystems. He specializes in photographing invertebrates, especially the more difficult ones including the smallest insects as well as various marine and aquatic species. He is now documenting the many types of animal species found in zooplankton, and matching the many types of pelagic larvae with the corresponding adults using DNA barcoding.  Peter has a Masters’ degree in Biochemistry and a Ph.D. in Genetics, and works as a Research Professor at UCI.  He is the immediate Past President of the Newport Bay Conservancy.
